CPU socket compatibility: AM4, AM5, LGA1700 and LGA1851

The socket is the physical and electrical interface between processor and motherboard. Get it wrong and nothing works — there is no adapter, no workaround. This is the single most important compatibility check in a build, and it is worth doing before you look at anything else.

AMD

AM4 (2016–present)

Unusually long-lived, covering Ryzen 1000 through 5000 series. AM4 is a PGA socket: the pins are on the processor, not the board, so a bent pin is a damaged CPU. It uses DDR4 exclusively. AM4 remains an excellent budget platform — a Ryzen 5 5600 on a B550 board still delivers strong value, and second-hand supply is plentiful.

AM5 (2022–present)

Ryzen 7000 and 9000 series. AM5 moved to LGA, so the pins now live in the socket and the CPU has flat contacts. It is DDR5 only — there is no DDR4 option, which is the most common surprise for people upgrading from AM4. AMD has committed to supporting the socket for several years, making it the better choice for a platform you intend to upgrade later.

Intel

LGA1700 (2021–2024)

12th, 13th and 14th generation Core. The important quirk: LGA1700 boards come in both DDR4 and DDR5 variants, and they are not interchangeable. A board is one or the other. Read the board’s full model name carefully — vendors often distinguish them only with a “D4” or “DDR4” suffix.

LGA1851 (2024–present)

Core Ultra 200S series. Physically similar in size to LGA1700 but electrically different and not compatible with it — LGA1700 coolers generally do still fit, which is a rare piece of good news.

The checks that actually catch problems

1. Chipset, not just socket

A matching socket is necessary but not sufficient. The chipset determines overclocking support, how many PCIe lanes you get and at what generation, and how many M.2 slots are usable. On AMD, B-series boards suit most builds while X-series adds connectivity. On Intel, Z-series permits CPU overclocking where B and H series do not.

2. BIOS version

This is the quiet killer. A board manufactured before your CPU was released may not boot it until its firmware is updated — and updating usually requires a working CPU. Many modern boards include BIOS Flashback, which flashes firmware from a USB stick with no CPU installed. If you are pairing a new processor with a board that has been sitting in a warehouse, treat Flashback as close to essential.

3. Cooler mounting

Coolers ship with brackets for specific sockets. AM4 and AM5 share cooler compatibility. LGA1700 and LGA1851 also share it. Moving between AMD and Intel usually means a different bracket — often free from the cooler manufacturer, but only if you ask before you need it.

4. Power delivery

A high core-count processor on a board with weak VRMs will run hot and throttle under sustained load. For a 12-core or higher chip, check that the board is rated for it rather than assuming a matching socket implies a matching capability.
